Real Estate perform "Gone" live from a refrigerator in new music video

“wistful melodies, guitar-driven grooves, and an all-encompassing warm vibe, but it's strikingly more adventurous.” - VICE

“the perfect pensive road-trip record" - Hypebeast

Today, Real Estate have shared a brand-new music video that also gives fans the limitless opportunity to create their own. The official visual shows the band performing their song “Gone”—among the many highlights of Real Estate’s new album, The Main Thingfrom the insides of a refrigerator, moving between trays of grapes, clams and eggs, a pile of frozen fish and a half-eaten birthday cake. Downloads of the raw footage, pre-prepared with a green screen for anyone to put them anywhere, are also available.

“We’ve always wanted to play inside of your refrigerator,” Real Estate says. “We unearthed this live in-studio performance of ‘Gone’ from way back in December, and our friends CALLEN were kind enough to make our dreams come true. We hope you enjoy this new video as much as we do!”

Taken from the live set filmed for the augmented reality concert experience they dubbed the “Quarantour” this spring, Real Estate’s “Gone” video is yet another example of how the band has delivered engaging ways to “push the creative boundaries that coronavirus-induced sheltering at home has imposed on the performing world” (Variety).

Real Estate produced “Gone” (Live Refrigerator Version) and the Quarantour in partnership with CALLEN, an independent creative agency based in Austin, TX.

Just before the COVID-19 lockdown began, Real Estate celebrated the release of The Main Thing with their last live performances: a day-long tour of short concerts outside the locations of extinct New York City record shops, “The Outstore Thing.” New Yorker’s Amanda Petrusich recounted the nostalgic and uplifting “drive-by eulogy” in a Talk Of The Town story you can read here.

In addition to freezer drawers and refrigerator shelves, Real Estate have brought “Gone” and more of The Main Thing to remotely recorded sessions for World Cafe and AV Club. Throughout quarantine, the band has celebrated Bandcamp Fridays by selling limited runs of t-shirts, tie-dyed by singer-guitarist Martin Courtney, with proceeds benefiting Fair Fight Action’s fight for free and fair elections.

Real Estate The Main Thing

Album | 28th February 2020

Over the last decade, Real Estate have crafted warm yet meticulous pop-minded music, specialising in soaring melodies that are sentimentally evocative and unmistakably their own. The Main Thing dives even further into the musical dichotomies they’re known for—lilting, bright guitar lines set against emotionally nuanced lyrics, complex arrangements conveyed breezily— and what emerges is a superlative collection of interrogative songs as full of depth, strangeness and contradictions as they are lifting hooks.
