Martin Courtney Shares New Song “Sailboat”

On June 24, Martin Courtney, the front man and singer of indie rock staples Real Estate, will be releasing Magic Sign, the follow up to his solo debut, Many Moons (2015). Today, Martin offers a second glimpse at the album to come with “Sailboat,” a charged-up and chugging attempt at overcoming despair with gratitude.

Martin on “Sailboat”: ”For some reason I always assumed I did not possess a ‘license to rock’. This song is my attempt at some unlicensed rocking. I was extremely fortunate to have Matt Barrick, who drummed on the greatest rock song of the 2000s, ‘The Rat’, on this one. Couldn’t have done it any other way.

Lyrically this song is kind of about keeping things in perspective and attempting to stay positive in the face of all of the bullshit. An increasingly difficult task.

And I just thought ‘Sailboat’ was a funny name.”

Following the release of Magic Sign, Martin will be embarking on a US tour including shows at The Lodge Room in Los Angeles on July 19 and at Elsewhere Zone 1 in Brooklyn on August 5. Support on all dates will be John Andrews & the Yawns, who will also serve as Courtney’s backing band.

Martin Courtney Magic Sign

Album | 24th June 2022

When Martin Courtney was a teenager, he knew how to get lost. In the late ‘90s and early 2000s, there’s Martin, loaded into a car with friends. They’re navigating the suburban sprawl of New Jersey with no destination in mind. He and his friends would “get thoroughly confused and look for familiar green signs with arrows pointing to towns we’d heard of. We’d call them ‘magic signs,’” he says.

That’s the thing about magic: when you go looking for it, you start to see it everywhere.  And you can hear it twinklingly throughout the ten songs on Magic Sign, the second solo album written, performed, & produced by the Real Estate songwriter. The album was recorded, mixed & co-produced by Rob Schnapf. Additional performers include Matt Barrick, Oliver Hill, Kacey Johansing, and Tim Ramsey
