The influence of the three albums Max Tundra, aka Ben Jacobs, recorded for Domino, cannot be overstated. Without precedent at the time, they echo throughout much contemporary electronic pop music. The first of the trilogy, Some Best Friend You Turned Out To Be, is more or less the most experimental; the second, Mastered By Guy At The Exchange, perhaps the most joyful; and the third, Parallax Error Beheads You, the most riotous - all remain essential. With all three albums reissued in 2022 alongside the release of Remixtape, the aptly named remix EP featured remixes from the likes of Julia Holter, A.G. Cook and Kero Kero Bonito, the stellar line-up illustrates Max Tundra's long lasting influence on popular music right now. A lot may have changed in the last 20 years, but Jacobs' ability to sound innovative and totally singular remains preserved in amber.
